This is a short film (21 minutes) about hoarders—I haven’t watched the whole thing yet, but wanted to make sure I could find it again when I have more time.
Because I love nothing more than throwing things away and avoiding clutter (I like clean surfaces and right angles—circular or round objects infuriate me), I am fascinated with and saddened by hoarders. It’s a mindset that I simply cannot begin to understand. Our downstairs neighbor is a certifiable hoarder—her unit is packed with boxes and debris of all sorts, and even her car is often filled (literally) with bags and boxes and containers. I’m pretty “live and let live” about it—she’s polite and quiet—and as long as it doesn’t become some sort of roach magnet or fire hazard that endangers our unit, she can just keep on keepin’ on.
via unconsumption:
‘POSSESSED’ enters the complicated worlds of four hoarders; people whose lives are dominated by their relationship to possessions. The film questions whether hoarding is a symptom of mental illness or a revolt against the material recklessness of consumerism. When does collecting become hoarding and why do possessions exert such an influence on our lives?
